💡 The formula is simple: Units = (Dose in mg ÷ Concentration in mg/mL) × 100. Or use our interactive dose calculator which does this automatically.
Understanding the Math
Insulin syringes are marked in units where 100 units = 1mL. So to convert:
- Divide your dose (mg) by your concentration (mg/mL) to get mL
- Multiply mL by 100 to get units on the syringe
Example: 5mg dose, 5mg/mL concentration → 5 ÷ 5 = 1mL → 1 × 100 = 100 units
Which Syringe to Use
| Draw Volume Needed | Recommended Syringe |
|---|---|
| Up to 1mL (100 units) | 1mL insulin syringe (U-100) |
| 1mL to 3mL | 3mL syringe with appropriate needle |
| Over 3mL | Consider higher concentration vial |
